Uzès and its region of Provence
UZÈS. Beautiful town combining medieval and renaissance architecture, this historical centre was listed by the Arts Council in the sixties and important restoration work was carried out which leaves the town standing in all its beauty ; tiny winding streets concealing magnificent noblemans houses in mellowed stone with typical Uzège green shutters surround the central "Place aux Herbes", magnificent square with arcades sheltering a large choice of antique shops and art galleries. A large choice of restaurants and cafés with terraces shaded by the immense century old plane trees provide an ideal spot for whiling away the long summer evenings.
The bustling Saturday market, probably one of the prettiest in France, is a pleasure for the eyes and the gourmets with all the perfumes of Provence to taste.
This part of Provence is particularly agreable off season. Clement temperatures with blue skies, sunshine, bathe the country side with an indefinable light so dear to so many famous artists
At the end of January is the Truffle festival in Uzès, the whole town is devoted to the black diamond, kilos for sale on the market place, demonstrations of truffle hunting and all the restaurants proposing a special truffle menu - an unique experience.
Pretty local villages surround Uzès, St Siffret and St Maximin propose a good choice of restaurants as well as Lussan, a typical Provencal hilltop village. Weekly markets can be found in many of these villages and local products can be found directly on the farm; goats cheese, honey and lucious fruit just picked from the surrounding orchards.
